WOMEN’S PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE

Less Knitting Done Last Year At a meeting of the Women’s Patriotic Committee there were present, Mesdames Hanan (in the chair), Ross, Dellow, Stout and Misses Hunter and Skinner. ■ The Wool Depot reported having sent 29 pullovers, 45 cranwells, 57 scarves, 73 balaclavas, 42 pairs mittens and 12 pairs of socks to Air Force Relations, Christchurch; to the Navy League, Wellington, six pullovers, two pairs seaboots, four pairs gloves and six pairs socks; to the Canterbury Patriotic Society, Christchurch, one balaclava, three pairs mittens, one pullover and 24 pairs socks. The head of the Wool Depot (Mrs Hawkes) furnished a report for the year which showed a considerable drop from the previous year. Goods knitted during 1944, with the figures for 1943 in parentheses, were: Air Force 5379 (2476); Navy 500 (469); Army 249 (7072); total 6128 (10,017). Wool knitted during the year totalled 12121 b against 26841 b last year. The secretary reported that the next quota of unaddressed parcels for the Armed Forces overseas would be 1320, and these would be packed early In February. The matter of reopening the Patriotic Shop was left until the next meeting.
