ICE IN FOLKESTONE HARBOUR

Cold Winter In Britain LONDON, January 26. Large blocks of ice were floating in Folkestone harbour at noon yesterday. After the sea had frozen during the night there was a solid sheet of ice for a distance of 50 to 60 feet from the quayside of the Inner basin into which the sea flows.

The daily cold spell in the Strait of Dover has been the most, severe since January, 1940. Merseyside and Deeside had the coldest day since February, 1929. Leeds, with 25 degrees of frost, had the coldest day for 50 years.

Saturday, January 20. was the most wintry day in Britain for many years, and there are reports from all parts of the country of heavy snowstorms, railway lines blocked, motor vehicles stranded and sheep and cattle buried in snowdrifts. Three hundred and fifty soldiers joined gangs of railway workers clearing lines north of Aberdeen. Further falls made the tracks impassable.
