AIRMAN HONOURED There was a fair attendance at the Coronation Hall on Wednesday evening, when a dance was held in honour of Aircraftman Tom Austin. Mr McIlwrick, chairman of the Orari Patriotic Committee, made a presentation on behalf of the district of a fountain pen and wished Aircraftman Austin the best of luck. Mr A. Black, on behalf of the R.S.A , and Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald on behalf of the Red Cross, also spoke. Aircraftman Austin suitably replied. During the evening Monte Carlo dances were won by Mrs Hooper i Geraldine) and Mr Jack Reilly and by Mrs L. Henderson and M. A. Black. Mr Alf Earl was M.C. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE At the October meeting of the Orari Women’s Institute Mrs Macdonald presided. Two new members, Mrs Palmer and Miss Palmer, were welcomed. Mrs Brenton and Mrs Bennett were appointed delegates to attend the Federation meeting in Timaru and remits for this meeting were discussed. It was decided to support the remit from Fairlie: “That the Government be asked to build houses to let to families of four children at 15/- or £1 ner week.” The “golden thread” was given by Mrs Watson and Mrs Prattley entertained "with a comic reading. A description of the Apennine Mountains in Italy was read by Mrs Macdonald. A short comic play was well acted by Mrs Watson, Miss White and Mrs Stevens, and was greatly enjoyed by members. The sales table in charge of Mrs Leary brought in 29/- for "Stratheona,” and Miss Cone reported that 20 dozen eggs had been received to be sent to the Timaru orphanages. The November meeting will be members’ day. Competitions resulted: Single bloom, Mrs Elliot 1, Mrs J. Henderson 2, Mrs Bennett 3; cluster, Mrs Macdonald 1, Mrs Henderson 2, Mrs Elliot 3; jar of flowers, Mrs Watson 1, Mrs Cone 2, Mrs Elliot 3.
