WAIMATE PEAS AND BEANS
WOMEN’S DIVISION
Picked More Than Fortnight Ago First On Canterbury Markets | Waimatc has the distinction of producing peas for the early marI kets each season. This year peas grown on the hillside above the town were the first to reach the Dunedin and Christchurch markets, while in addition broad beans were also sent forward. Both peas and beans have been going forward since the beginning of the month, the peas in Christchurch fetching up to 2/8 pel lb and the broad beans 1/6 per lb. Production for the early market has been pioneered by one grower, who this season has about 15 acres in peas. Interest has been shown by other farmers in the locality, and about 60 acres of peas in all are flourishing on the hillside at present. The weather has favoured the crop, and an excellent return has been the result. Although at present sufficient are offering for the work, pickers may present a difficulty when a few days of warm weather bring the crops in with a rush.
