TEMUKA MEMORIAL HALL

Support By Progress League Delegates Appointed To Conference “A hall is badly needed in Temuke and would mean the greatest good for the greatest number,” said Mr W. F. Evans at a meeting of the Temuka Progress League, held yesterday, and presided over by Mr H. B. Strange. -Personally I think the Returned Services' Association should be distinct and free from any combination, and is unwise to seek to combine with anyone. We have to get the idea of a Town Hall out of our heads and call it a Memorial Hall. We cannot expect people in the county to subscribe to a town hall,” said Mr Evans. The chairman said that he considered the idea of a Memorial Hall subscribed for by the people a sound one. Mr Evans: People in the County subscribed to the Cenotaph after the last war, and they would no doubt subscribe to a Memorial Hall this time. On the motion of Messrs Evans and L. G. Scrimshaw, it was agreed that the delegates to the conference be instructed to support a Memorial Hall only, comprising concert chamber, dance floor, supper rooms, etc. and a memorial chapel. “There is no doubt that the original idea was to concentrate everything at Geraldine,’’ said Mr W. H. McMillan, when the chairman asked if any further action would be taken in regard to the Geraldine County building proposals. "We now have the assurance that the foreman and the county yards will be left at Temuka,” he said. “This warrants the stand taken by the League in the matter.’’ Tyres And Tubes Owing to the shortage of material, the monthly quotas of tyres and tubes allowed to the Temuka Bicycle Tyre and Tube Rationing Committee have been reduced by half since July. This month a slight increase in the allocation, which has to cover both Geraldine and Temuka, has been announced. Regarding the price and quality of both tyres and tubes, the Temuka Committee has received advice from the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) stating that the rubber situation has been desperate throughout the world. It has been physically impossible to retain i the quality of tyres and tubes for bicycles, but every endeavour has been made to keep the quality as high as possible. Having regard to the enormous demands made by the fighting forces for rubber, we have been lucky that civilian requirements have been met to the extent which they have been. It is hoped that it will be possible to restore the quality of tyres and tubes to their pre-war level before long. The committee appreciate the service extended to them by the Rubber Controller and look with confidence to an early return to normal conditions Girl Guides Celebrate In common with all. other companies throughout the Dominion the Temuka Girl Guide Company began the twentyfirst birthday celebrations of Guiding in New Zealand with a camp fire at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
