WAIMATE HIGH SCHOOL

Completion Of Syllabus Difficulties Mentioned

Difficulties with the completion of tire examination syllabus were mentioned by the Rector (Mr M. Leadbetter; in a report to the Waimate High School Board of Governors. The Rector referred to the annual cross-country run, the tentative decision to hold sports day on October 15, and the fact that cricket would be commenced at an early date. “I am rather concerned that additional interruptions of school time should be reduced to a minimum,” he said, and stated that because of the considerable number of pupils conveyed by buses it was Impossible to make up lost time either at the beginning or end of the school day. “I am not the only one who will with difficulty complete the examination z syllabus —with a minimum of revision—by the end of the year,” he said. Mr Leadbetter mentioned that a new bus which had taken up running had sufficient capacity to carry all the pupils residing in the Morven, Willowbridge and Studholme areas. Since the last meeting of the Board six girls and one boy had left, making the present roll number 191 (110 girls and 81 boys). The roll was well maintained for the present period of the year. Mrs Ruston was carrying on as relieving assistant. Further attention had been given on the school ground proper to the improving of some untidy areas. The pupils had “adopted” a number of trees on the sports ground, the idea being to keep clean the surrounding area. The new vyces for the woodwork room had arrived. The meeting decided on an inspection to investigate the possibility of having the land drained round the trees on the sports field. No replies had been received to an advertisement for a relieving teacher, and Mrs Ruston had taken up the position for the current term, the .secretary (Mr d’A. S. Grut) reported. The question is to be further considered by the Board at the November meeting. Present at the meeting were Messrs T. A. Wilson (chairman), F. Nash. T. L. Hayman, A. G. McHardy, G. R. Watters and J. M. King.
