TEMUKA RETURNED MEN

Sincere thanks for what they had done and a welcome home from the citizens of Temuka were extended to five Temuka men returned from overseas by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr D. C. Clark) at the civic function held during the dance given by the Temuka Soldiers’ Entertainment Committee in the Drill Hall on Friday evening. “These I men who have been away have done their job both faithfully and well,” said Mr Clark, “and it rests with us who have been carrying on in their absence to do ours anil give them every help we can.” The guests of the evening were Lieutenant R. J. Opie, W.0.11. S. E. R. Southby, Driver J. M. A. Ritchie, Driver C. R. Beck, Private W. Rickus and L.A.C. L. Ellen. “We joined in wishing you farewell and godspeed,” said the Rev. C. H. Kendon, speaking on behalf of the Temuka churches. “We now rejoice with you and with your loved ones and, indeed, with the whole community, not only in your return but in the great measure of success which has attended your efforts. Future generations will recall with pride the part that our small country has taken in this conflict and the way in which our men and women have been represented in all the fighting services. The issue is not yet decided and the war is not yet over, but we can pride ourselves that, because of the way our fighting services have played their part in every theatre of war. and because of the support given by those who have stood sure and steadfast behind you in the Homeland, the cause to which our nation has set itself will go on to final victory and to the dawn of a better world in which the banner of justice and a greater degree of brotherhood will be unfurled over all mankind.” No one had followed the fortunes of the present-day soldiers more keenly than the soldiers of the last war, said Mr C.
