Old Man Rescued From
Burning House
(N.Z.P.A.) WANGANUI. Oct. 1. Rescued from a burning house on the Silverhope Road, about a mile from Hunterville, early this morning, John Hill, aged 87. was subsequently admitted to the Wanganui Hospital with burns about the hands and feet. His condition is reported as fairly comfortable.
Hill, who is a bachelor, lived alone in a small dwelling for more than half a century. He is deaf, and when his home caught alight shortly after midnight he did not hear the noise of the flames. The rescue was carried out by John Healey, an employee of a sawmill opposite. He saw flames coming from the house and, in spite of the fire having a good hold, he entered the building and carried Hill to safety
