WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
SOUTH CANTERBURY FEDERATION At a meeting of the executive of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes, Miss E. L. J. Davies presided. The following voluntary organisers reported visiting Institute meetings: Miss Davies (Winchester), Mrs McLeod (Claremont), Mrs Martin (Arowhenua), and Mrs Pearce (Hilton). Mrs Gillingham reported a successful birthday party at Fairlie. Mrs Bell reported that the Geraldine Institute had raised £4O by card parties for soldiers’ parcels. Mrs Gillingham reported that hospitality had been arranged for four children and one adult. Group Travel visits were being arranged to Queenstown in September, and the Franz Josef Glacier early in November. A satisfactory progress report on the depot was presented by Miss Davies. Mrs Bell (treasurer) presented a satisfactory financial report. Mrs McLeod, delegate to the Patriotic Committee, advised members that Christmas parcels for the oyerseas troops would be packed next month. Mrs Hislop reported making a personal inspection of every tree planted on the Temuka-Timaru highway, and advised that a man was required for mending fences, pruning and replanting trees. The secretary was instructed to send a letter of thanks and appreciation to Mrs Hislop. Remits received from Institutes were discussed. It was decided to forward the following recommendation to “Home and Country,” that articles be included on women in other countries, living conditions and food. BURKE’S PASS The September meeting of the Burke's Pass Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs McCarthy. It was decided to send 10/- to the Leper appeal. Christmas parcels for local soldiers are to be sent this week. Competitions resulted as follows: Bloom, Miss G. Mackintosh 1, Mrs E. Clarke 2. Kettle holder, Mrs McCarthy 1. During the afternoon Catherine Clarke delighted with a recitation. HUNTER At the monthly meeting of the Hunter Women’s Institute Miss M. Mercer presided. It was decided to help the Leper fund and the Navy League. A comprehensive talk on “The Pacific Islands” was given by Mr F. Turner. The results of the competitions for tire year were announced as follows: Bloom, Mrs McKenzie 1. Miss B. Anstey 2; mixed competitions. Mrs McKenzie 1. Miss P. Jackson 2. Competitions for the month resulted: —Bloom. Mrs Allan 1, Mrs McKenzie 2: floral apron, Miss M. Mercer 1, Miss B. Anstey 2: plain scones, Mrs Allan 1, Miss P. Jackson 2.
