WAIMATE DITCHER IN USE

Public Works Machine Trenches For Drainage Extension The ditching machine loaned by the Public Works Department to the Waimate Borough Council for the sewerage extension work, has been engaged on the task about a week, and already a trench has been opened for a distance of more than half a mile. Starting in Wilkin Street, the ditcher has crossed the racecourse and is now in the Massey Street area.

“The machine is doing an excellent job,” said the Town Clerk (Mr B. S. Runciman). “The men are being saved a considerable amount of labour." Progress in the work is now limited only by the comparatively slow process of laying the pipes.

Savage Club

A raid carried out on the Waimate hapu by a party of 40 Savages from Oamaru resulted in an enjoyable evening for members of the Waimate Savage Club. The visitors presented a programme of music, song and story. After the march in chorus “The Savage Braves of Oamaru,” Great Chief Henry Hay was initiated into the chair by Great Chief G. S. Collett, of the Waimate Club.

Items on the programme were: Orchestra; vocal solos, Savages L. Blair and S. Armstrong; piano-accordion. Savage F. Horman; humorous items. Past Great Chief E. McDiarmid and partv, and Past Great Chief J. MacMillan and Savage Hendon; recitations, Savage E. McNulty; violin solos, Savage H. Bayer.

High School

Members of the Parent-Teacher Association formed in conjunction with the Waimate High School are being catered for at their meetings by interesting and instructive talks. At a recent meeting Mr M. Leadbetter, rector of the school, spoke on changes in post-primary curriculum, and an illustrated talk on Palestine was given by Mr D. M. Webster. A number of concert items were contributed. _ A feature of next meeting will be a discussion on careers in the Public Service, when the speakers will be Mr A. Bell (Public Trustee, Timaru >, Mr R. Calverley (Stationmaster. Waimate), and Mr E. E. Earnshaw (Pastmaster, Waimate).

Basketball

Three basketball teams from the Waimate Primary School visited Oamaru and played matches against Waitaki Junior High School. The Waimate A team won bv 16 to 4, and the B team by 10 to 8, but the Waimate C team lost, 6 to 14.

Golf

There are still some outstanding matches in the first round of the Waimate Golf Club's A and B grade championships, and these must be completed before August 26, the date set down for the semi-finals. An additional match in the first round of the B grade is D. Keyes v. C. G. HolnT-s. In the semi-finals of the A grade T. Wilson will meet A. Guy, while M. Leadbetter will meet the winner of J. W. Tennant v. R. Deacon. In the semifinals. G grade. B. W. Maslin will play A. Gale, and the winner of the HolmesKeyes match will meet the winner of Morland- Wright. The semi-finals in the Hamilton Cup competition should be played byAugust 26. The draw is: Mr and Mrs T. Waldie v. Mrs N. A. Rattray and J. W. Tennant; Mrs J. Healey and A. Guv v. Mr and Mrs M. Leadbetter.

Saturday’s match is a fourball bogey partners to be chosen.
