Two Executed At Gibraltar
(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 11. After a trial before the Supreme Court of Gibraltar Special Court, Luis Lopez Cordoncuenca, aged 23, and Jose Martin Munoz, aged 19, were executed at Gibraltar to-day for offences against the Gibraltar Defence Regulations, 1939, says an official statement.
Cordoncuenca. who pleaded not guilty of treachery, was an agent working for an Axis group in the south of Spain recruiting Spaniards to commit sabotage at Gibraltar on behalf of the German Secret Service. Bombs were smuggled across the frontier to Gibraltar by agents working for the group. These bombs were passed to Cordoncuenca, who was recruited by a Spaniard at La Linea who was working for the German Secret Service.
Munoz succeeded in smuggling a bomb into Gibraltar and placing it on a petroleum tank in the fuel enclosure of the coaling island. The bomb caused a serious fire, destroying property and fuel. Munoz also had hidden in Gibraltar a second bomb with which re intended to commit further sabotage if he escaped detection after his first act.
