111,000 TREES PLANTED
Borough Council Scheme PAREORA AREA INSPECTED The tßeserves Department of the Timaru Borough Council has planted 111.000 pin us insignis trees this season, 60,000 in the Pareora block and 50,000 on various areas adjacent to the old watercourse from Brigg’s Gully toward Timaru. Members of the Timaru Borough Council, accompanied by the Curator (Mr A. W. Anderson) visited the plantation at Pareora. which covers a large flat near the fishing huts. An inspection showed that the trees had made a splendid strike, to which the recent wet weather had been a contributing factor. Owing to the heavy unseasonable weather and the shortage of labour, planting was delayed to a certain extent this season.
“A spark may destroy a forest,” is an apt slogan on notice boards warning the public to take care in regard to the. lighting and subsequent extinguishing of fires. With the approach of the hot weather, when fire risks increase considerably, it is hoped that the warnings will have a salutary effect on campers and picknickers
