GERALDINE RED CROSS CENTRE
HOSPITALITY FOR U.S.A. FORCES
A committee to go into the matter of providing hospitality for convalescent members of the United States Forces was set up at a meeting of the Geraldine Red Cross Centre. Mrs J. M. H. Tripp presided. A letter was received from Dominion Headquarters asking how many houses in the district would be willing to give hospitality. The following sub-committee was set up: Mesdames L. E. Williams (convener), P. W. Hislop, G. A. M. McDonald. Miss A. M. H. Howell, Mrs W. S. Crotty (representing the Women’s Division), Mrs A. J. Burmester (representing the Women’s Institute), and Mrs Michael Barker. A letter was received from Dominion Headquarters asking that centres cooperate in the All Purposes Appeal, the money collected by the Red Cross to be paid, into a trust fund for spending on prisoners of war and sick and wounded. It was decided to ask the Geraldine Patriotic Committee to confer with the Red Cross executive about co-operating in raising general funds for the AU Purposes Appeal. Reports on sick and wounded men from the Geraldine and Temuka districts were submitted by Mrs Hislop and Miss Hope. Mrs Hislop asked if the sub-centre would make hussifs for their own prisoners of war. It was decided that all members attending the annual meeting should ba asked to bring a plate to help with the supper. A committee consisting of Mrs Orbell, Canon A. H. Norris, Mr D. C. McKechnie and the secretary was appointed to complete arrangements for the annual meeting. Junior Red Cross Junior Red Cross activities were discussed and Mrs F. J. Robertson was appointed Centre organiser. Mrs Robertson said she thought it too big a district for one person to manage, and that she would be quite willing to direct the Temuka district if someone could be found to undertake the organising in the Geraldine district. It was decided that Mrs Robertson report at a later meeting if she needed assistance. The secretary (Mr W. W. Davies) read Mrs W. Inglis’ report on the Junior Red Cross conference held in Wellington, and members of the executive expressed appreciation of the splendid way Mrs Inglis had presented the report.
