MILITIA SERVICE
Australian Proposal (11.20 p.m.) CANBERRA. Jan. 29. The Defence Act Amending Bill, which is to extend the boundaries for the use of the militia was introduced in the House of Representatives by Mr Curtin to-day. The Bill defines the area in which the militia is liable for services as “the area bounded on the west by the 110th meridian of east longitude, on the north by the Equator and on the east by the 159th meridian of east longitude." This means that New Zealand, New Caledonia, the Philippines, Guadalcanal and mast of the islands of the Netherlands East Indies will be outside the service area. Singapore, where 17,000 Australians were captured by the Japanese, is also excluded. The Rill will be debated on Wednesday.
