A PILOT’S ASHES

Scattered Over English Channel (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Jan. 25. Royal Air Force fighters flew over the English Channel to-day, but not to meet the enemy. They flew to scatter on the sea the ashes of Flight Lieutenant Richard Hope Hillary, a Battle of Britain pilot and author of "The Last Hope," who was almost burned to death but came back, to fight. Simultaneously a memorial service was held at St. Martin's in the Fields which was attended by ail ranks of the Air Force, also a member of the Margate lifeboat crew which rescued Flight Lieutenant Hillary when he was shot down more than two years ago. The Rev. Canon Elliott, in an address, said Flight Lieutenant Hillary was a man of outstanding courage. He showed unconquerable spirit in hospital and came back to overcome the "last enemy” in the air.
