FAIRLIE TRANSPORT OF GOODS
Appeal To Licensing Authority
Restoration Of Through Service Advocated
Mr J. J, O'Sullivan presided over a representative meeting of Fairlie business men on Monday. The chairman explained that the meeting had been called for the purpose of discussing the question of the cartage of goods to Fairlie. For the past 35 years an Albury firm of cartage contractors had maintained a regular goods service from Timaru to Fairlie. This service had enabled business men to have their goods delivered direct from the stores in Timaru to their destination in Fairlie. This mode of transport. Mr O'Sullivan continued, was most economic as it did away with the necessity of short carting from the stores to rail at Timaru, and also from the rail r .t Fairlie. Some time ago the licence of the Albury firm had been amended, which had had the effect of eliminating the service for the last 10 miles from Albury to Fairlie. It was contended that the additional petrol required to complete the service from Albury to Fairlie was not in excess of seven gallons a week. Much more petrol than this would be required to cart goods to and from the rail at each end, as each business was required to make separate arrangements. After a very full discussion in which the speakers strongly urged that the services of the Albury firm should again be made available, Mr D. Jeune moved, and Mr W. Close seconded, and the motion was carried unanimous!/, that a petition be forwarded through Mr D. C. Kidd. M.P., to the Licensing Authority strongly appealing for the reinstatement of the service from Albury to Fairlie. VICE-REGAL VISIT Their Excellencies Sir Cyril Fewall and Lady Newall will make their first official visit to Fairlie on Monday. Arrangements are now in hand for a welcome by the citizens. Weather permitting, the official ceremony will take place at the Domain at 3 p.m.. On arrival at the Domain their Excellencies will be met by Mr C. V. Kirke, chairman of the Mackenzie County Council, and Mrs Kirke. They will be escorted to the dais where a short address of welcome will be delivered by Mr Kirke. After his reply, Sir Cyril will meet the school children, Boy Scouts, W.W.S.A., and returned soldiers. Business men are being asked to close their premises for two hours in the afternoon. After the function at the Domain, their Excellencies will be entertained to afternoon tea at the Council office. If the weather is unfavourable the function will be held in Aorangi Hall. WELCOME RAIN After a fairly long spell of hot weather, a welcome rain set in on Monday morning and continued steadily throughout the day and night. Although it will have the effect of interrupting shearing operations, the rain will do much good to growing crops and pastures. HOME GUARD Before commencing the parade on Monday evening Lieutenant J. A. Fraser of the Ambulance Platoon made reference to the death of Guardsman John Small. The deceased had been a keen member of the platoon and the parade stood in silence as a mark >f respect to his memory.
