WAIMATE RABBIT CONTROL

Measures In Ikawai District

A further step toward the formation of a rabbit board was taken at a meeting of ratepayers of the proposed area, held in the Ikawai Hall, Mr F. Brown presided, and Mr Grant, chief inspector of the Agricultural Department at Christchurch, and Mr J. Griffiths, inspector at Waimate, were present.

A previous meeting had expressed itself strongly regarding the necessity for taking some steps to check the spread of the rabbit pest, and it had been decided to call together settlers from the whole of the area which it was proposed to control under the board. For the benefit of those not present at the earlier meeting, an outline of the procedure was given by the Department officers. The meeting decided to circulate the necessary petition, which upon receiving the signatures of more than 50 per cent of the settlers concerned will enable the formation of the board to proceed. In view of the likelihood of a board being set up at Waihaorunga, it was decided to omit the Douglas Settlement from the proposed area. MAKIKIHI RED CROSS At the December meeting of the Maklklhi Red Cross Sub-Centre, Mrs Simmons presided over a good attendance. Regret was expressed at the departure of Mrs Brown, who had been a very' willing worker. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to Mrs Johnson for her interest and help in ambulance work. A smaller amount of knitting than usual was handed in owing to the prevalence of sickness, especially among the members of the Junior organisation. A report showed that the personnel of the Red Cross depot had acquitted themselves very satisfactorily at the recent E.P.S. trial.
