AIRMEN WELCOMED
Value Of The Radio
NEW YORK, Jan. 6.
"Thanks to the radio and the aeroplane, Americans know New Zealanders and Australians much better,” said the Mayor (Mr La Guardia) at a reception in the City Hall to 200 airmen from New Zealand and Australia. "We have a common interest in the Pacific. If you go, we go, and we do not intend to go. Your people have been so understanding with our ‘boys' and made them feel at home.” Mr La Guardia, himself a flier in the first world war, congratulated the “Anzacs” on being in "the queen of the Services.” He said he gained an unchallenged record in the last war as “the world’s worst flier.”
The airmen laughed uproariously when Mr La Guardia described the ancient aircraft in which he flew. He added that the instruments in the plane were defective and the compass often failed, but in his case that made no difference.
At the conclusion of the reception the visiting airmen startled the Mayor and officials with a tremendous rooflifting cheer.
