BISCUITS BY THE TON
Dominion Manufacture Brisk conditions obtained in the biscuit and confectionery industry during 1941-42, reports the Government Statistician. The outstanding feature of the statistics is the quantity of biscuits made, 16,801 tons, or 76 per cent, more than in the year 1940-41 (9537 tons). Persons engaged in the industry during 1941-42 numbered 3772, an increase of 7 per cent, over the figure for the previous year (3526). Salaries and wages paid advanced by *2O per cent. Cost of materials used and the value of products increased by 28 per cent, and 30 per cent, respectively. Added value rose by 34 per cent. For the year in review, 1941-42, materials used included 13.943 tons of flour and 9889 tons of sugar. Weights of products in tons were: Biscuits, 16,801 tons; grain products and icecream cones, 2053; chocolates and confectionery and chocolate bars, 7997 tons; other confectionery, 5526 tons, a total (apart from biscuits) of 15,576 tons of sweetstuffs. Imports of cocoa and chocolate for ten months ended October 31, 1942. were 50 pounds only of the value of £l6. compared With 160,836 pounds and of the value of £1*2,715 for the corresponding ten months of last year.
