CAR CONVERTED

Attempt To Crush Police Vehicle Against Post (N.Z.P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 6. When James Robert Sutherland converted a car in the city he led the police a merry dance. He was chased by a police car for 25 miles, at times touching a speed of 80 miles an hour, before he was arrested. These facts were revealed in the Magistrate’s Court to-day when Sutherland, a soldier, aged 23, alias Pat Evans, was charged with having converted a car. He was sentenced to three months’ hard labour by Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M. The police said that at one stage of the chase Sutherland tried to crush the police car against a post. He missed other cars and pedestrians by inches. “It is one of the worst cases of this kind we have had for a long time," said a police officer.
