FLEET AIR ARM

Timaru Boy Gains Commission

Sub-Lieutenant R. E. Cumming

Sub-Lieutenant Russell E. Cumming, a son of Mr and Mrs W. A. Cumming of 87A Otipua Road, has obtained his commission in the Fleet Air Arm.

A former pupil of the Timaru Boys’ High School, Sub-Lieutenant Cumming took part in many sporting activities. He was in the first fifteen and during his final year was vice-captain. He was also bandmaster of the school band. On leaving school he joined the stock department of the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association, and, after 18 months there, he accepted a similar position in the New Zealand Farmers’ Association, Christchurch. He was also a member of the Timaru Municipal Band.

Enlisting in the Fleet Air Arm, he left New Zealand in October, 1941. After eight months in England he went to Canada to continue his training, and was later transferred to Florida where he is now stationed.

Mr Cumming has also received advice that another son, Flight Sergeant Dudley Cumming, who was wounded in September last, and who was awarded the D.F.M., was now out of hospital and had rejoined his squadron.
