Father And Son Honoured
Presentation to L.A.C. Rattray
Residents and friends met in the j Waituna School to make a presenta- ! tion to Leading Aircraftman Michael i Rattray, when Mr D. Taylor (chairi man of the Entertainment Committee), in extending best wishes to the guest, mentioned that the function was unique in that Michael’s father. Major N. A. Rattray, had been honoured in the Waituna School earlier in the war. Mr A. Copland, of the Returned Services’ Association, referred to the work Mrs Rattray was undertaking during the absence of her husband, who was a prisoner of war, and her son. The speaker congratulated Mrs Rattray on the example set by her, and expressed the hope that Leading Aircraftman Rattray would, on his return, follow in his parents’ footsteps and that he would do as much for returned soldiers as his father had done. Messrs F. Meyer, W. Campbell and E. Foley added their tributes. Mrs D. Taylor, in making the presentation to Aircraftman Rattray of a gold-mounted cigarette holder and an envelope containing money, expressed the wish that the best of good fortune would attend him. The recipient had the moral support of 14 other servicemen, each of whom received a packet of cigarettes. Leading Aircraftman Rattray thanked the gathering and the speakers, and expressed the hope that he would be as good a soldier as his father. Dances were contributed by Miss Noreen Eathorne, Messrs Smith and Fogarty contributed songs, and Mr D. Taylor was at the piano. Music for the dancing was supplied by Miss A. Patterson. Mr G. Court was M.C. NEW YEAR’S EVE Fine warm weather for the last day of the Old Year brought many persons to town in the evening, and a holiday spirit prevailed. The improvement in the war situation as compared with a year ago was reflected in the cheerful atmosphere surrounding seasonal shopping, and retailers generally experienced a fairly busy evening. The New Year was ushered in in timehonoured manner. The Waimate Silver Band assembled in front of the Post Office and as the clock chimed the strains of “Auld Lang Syne” rose on the midnight air.

The engagement is announced of Winifred Doreen. W.A.1.. W.A.A.F., eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs E. H. Smart, of Nelson, to Sergeant Harold V. Pike, eldest son of Mr and Mrs V. C Pike, of Timaru.
