FAIRLIE HOME GUARD FUNERAL

Late Mr John Small

The funeral of Guardsman John Small, which was held on Wednesday, was the first in which the deceased had been a member of the Home Guard.

Thirty members of C Company of the Mackenzie battalion paraded under Major D. Jeune, M.M., battalion commander, at St. Patrick’s Church. After Requiem Mass, which was celebrated by the Rev. Father O. Gallagher, the funeral cortege, headed by the Home Guardsmen, proceeded to the Fairlie Cemetery, where the interment took place.

At the graveside the Last Post was sounded by Bugler F. Smith. The following members of the Ambulance Platoon, of which the deceased had been a member, acted as bearers: Lieutenant J. A. Fraser, Sergeant J. N. Reid, Corporal J. Braddick, LanceCorporal K. Anderson, Guardsmen C. Carney and F. Stevenson. The late Mr Small was born at Fairlie. where he had resided for the past 63 years. A well-known and highly respected resident, the large attendance at the funeral testified to the esteem in which he was held.
