MILK FOR CITY SUPPLY
“ Paltry Increase In Price ” (N.Z.P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 8. The increase in price to be paid to producers by vendors of the Christchurch milk supply was condemned by the producers to-day as being inadequate. The price tribunal announced yesterday that an average year round price of 11 l-6d per gallon would be given against Hid formerly. “I cannot say that it seems likely to be satisfactory,” said the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr E. H. Andrews) commenting on the Price Tribunal’s decision. “The increase is so paltry that it is not likely to afford any substantial improvement in the outlook for milk production next- year, and that is the aspect which primarily concerns the City Council.” Mr Andrew’s said the Council had made representations for a better price to producers. An average of 1/- was suggested because it was believed that at the present price there would be insufficient production to meet the people’s needs next year. He could not say whether the Council would again take up the matter with the Government, but he thought the Council's milk committee might have some i: commendation to make.
