WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
SHERWOOD DOWNS The April meeting of the Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs A. B. Mackenzie, who welcomed one new member.
Members stood in silence in sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr C. J. Talbot. Miss L. Bray gave a talk on her Karitane training, illustrating it with many photographs. Mrs Ross gave seasonal gardening notes, and a letter from a soldier, describing a holiday in Palestine, was read by Mrs Ibbetson. Mrs Jeune, secretary of the Fairlie branch of the W.WB.A., spoke of the work of the Auxilary and urged members to Join. There was a good response to Mrs Jeune’s appeal. Mrs Cliff, of Fairlie, delighted the audience with several solos. Arrangements were made for the birthday party in May. Mrs Ross offered to make a cake. Mesdames Annis and Williams were hostesses.
Competitions resulted as follows: Something new from something old (for Lady Galway Guild), Mrs Ibbetson 1, Mrs Mackenzie 2, Miss Laird 3. Bloom: Mrs Ross 1, Mrs Ibbetson 2, Mrs Cuthbertson 3. CAVE At this month’s meeting of the Cave Women’s Institute, Miss Amyes presided. It was stated that another lot of parcels had been sent to all the local soldiers; and members were requested to bring a tin of ginger nuts, a face cloth and a khaki handkerchief to the next meeting, to be included in parcels to be sent in June. Tea was served by the committee and a social half hour was spent. Miss R. Wlseley contributed pianoforte solos and Mrs M. E. Eagle (songs). Community singing was conducted, with Miss Wiseley at the piano and Mrs Jones as song leader. An advertisement competition was won by Mrs Malthus, with Miss Fairbank and Miss Amyes (equal) second.
The results of the afternoon’s competitions were as follows:—Buttonhole, Mrs Malthus 1, Mrs J. Little 2, Miss Bryson 3. Posy in egg cup, Mrs J. Little 1, Mrs McPherson 2, Mrs Malthus 3.
TEMUKA The annual meeting of the Temuka Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs W. L. Harrison. In spite of difficult times the meetings had been well attended and the interests in the various activities had been maintained throughout the year. Knitting had been done for the Patrotic Depot and sewing for the Lady Galway Guild. A Christmas parcel had been sent to relatives of members who were overseas, and five had been sent to local men who were without kinsfolk. A competition was won by Mrs V. Brookland.
The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs W. L. Harrison; vice-presidents, Mrs Greenfield and Miss Foden; secretary, Mrs F. Martin; treasurer, Mrs H. Wilson; groupconvener, Mrs Brookland; tea convener, Mrs Searle; Institute hostess, Miss Foden; competitions, Mrs Greenfield; sales table, Mrs T. Scott and Mrs F. Donnlthorne; press steward, Mrs Martin; committee, Mesdames Levens, Wilson, Clark, Harron, Wareing, Flana;an, Greenfield, A. Donnithorne, F. Donnithorne, Scott, Maister, Searle, B. Smith, Whitehead, McMillan, Martin, Ward, Misses Foden and Ferguson. Winners of the monthly competitions were as follows:—Madiera cake, Mrs Fletcher 1. Tomato relish, Mrs Fletcher 1. Specimen bloom, Mrs Wheeler 1 and 2, Mrs A. Donnithorne 3.
