Strenuous efforts were made for some hours to rescue him. Superintendent Clark, of the Masterton Fire Brigade, was let down the well but became jammed and was raised with difficulty in an exhausted condition. Mr Malneck was given up for dead but revived and communication with him was established at 11.20 p.m. and he was brought to the top. He had been overcome by fumes and lost consciousness.
