GERMANY MUST NOT REARM
British Attitude Defined
(Rec. 12.30 a.m.) RUGBY, Mar. 5. The British attitude towards the German state and people was restated in the House of Commons by the Foreign Secretary (Mr Anthony Eden) In reply to Commander Stephen KingHall. who asked whether the Order of the Day issued by M. Stalin, emphasising the necessity of making a distinction between the Hitlerite regime and the German people also represented the policy of the British Government. Mr Eden replied that the attitude of the British Government to this matter had been repeatedly stated both on their own behalf and jointly with other Governments. It was not inconsistent with M. Stalin’s recent pronouncement. Mr Eden reminded the House of a statement he made on August 30 last defining the attitude of the British Government to Germany when he said the British policy towards Germany after the war might have a two-fold purpose. On the one hand Germany must be placed in a condition in which it would be impossible for her again to rearm and resume the struggle for domination over the peace-loving nations. They had had enough of that from Germany. On the other hand it was equally important that Germany should not become a source of embarrassment to her neighbours and the world by suffering an economic collapse. It was clear that, neither of these purposes was attainable so long as the present regime in Germany continued.
