Upon the departure of General Sir Archibald Wavell, the Netherlands Government instructed the Gover-nor-General of the East Indies to transfer the command of the fighting forces to Lieutenant-General H. ter Poorten (shown above) who will command the land forces while acting Rear-Admiral J. H. A. van Staveren will command the naval forces as Rear-Admiral Helfrech has been entrusted with a special mission.
