NARROW ESCAPE
Bathers In Difficulties NEW PLYMOUTH. Feb. 21. The heavy undertow running at Centennial Park, Paritutu, was nearly responsible for a drowning. It was only the coolness and presence of mind of a 12-year-old boy that averted a fatality. Three small boys, Barry Smyth, aged 11 years, Michael Smyth, aged eight years, sons of Mr and Mrs J. J. Smyth, Vogeltown, and Barrie Wilson, aged 12 years, son of Mr and Mrs C. L. Wilson, Brooklands, were bathing when Michael Smyth and Barrie Wilson got into difficulties. Barry Smyth was able to help his brother ashore, but the other boy was carried out. He calmly commenced dog paddling. Mr Smyth and Mr S. D. Newton, Vogeltown. went out to bring the boy ashore, but they, too, got into difficulties in the strong undertow. Fortunately, several other men came to their assistance and brought -the boy ashore none the worse for his experience, although he was out fully half an hour.
