RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

A Budget Of News And Views FIXTURES Racing Feb. 21—Waikato R.C. Feb. 21—Westland R.C. Feb. 21—Woodville J.C. Feb. 28—Dunedin J.C Feb. 28—Taranaki J.C. Feb. 28—Te Aroha J.C. Feb. 28—Greymouth J.C. Hearth is an acceptor in two races at the Westland meeting to-morrow. She was paid up for in two at Trentham, and again at Motukarara. Race programmes in Brisbane are now restricted to eight races (including divisions), and the first event must not commence before 2 p.m. This provision is made so that tram traffic during the lunch hour will not be interfered with. Owing to war conditions, the Hunters’ Plate at the Birchwood meeting is open to hurdle and steeplechase jockeys. For three or four seasons it had been a race for amateur riders only. D. P. Wilson has a big collection of trophies, but he has never won a Dunedin Cup for himself, and this may Inspire him to start Hearth in this race in preference to the Publicans’ Handicap. Tidewaiter, who did more than passing well as a hurdler, is to be raced over steeplechase fences during the coming winter. Prince Plato has not competed in the best sprint company, but his win at Hawera with 9.9 made it apparent that he is up to metropolitan standard. The Plato three-year-old has a record of seven wins and three seconds in his last 11 starts. Mr H. R. Tyler paid 325 gns for Beau Vaals, who has won him £1455. The crack two-year-old was bought privately by Mr M. J. Moodabe when a yearling, and when Mr Moodabe sold out Beau Vaals was knocked down to 'the Takanini trainer F. Smith, acting for Mr Tyler, who had not previously owned a horse. Busybody, a two-year-old winner at Flemington recently, credited Talking (Mr Alan Cooper’s £19,000 purchase) with his first success as a sire. Talking was out of the New Zealand mare Society, and Busybody is a daughter of Philight (Philamor-Sennight, by Day Comet). Some of Talking’s first batch of yearlings made four figures at the sales, but the top bid for Busybody was 70gns and Mr Alan Cooper declined to sell.

There is no outstanding two-year-old in the Dunedin Champagne Stakes. The best-performed is the Southland filly Carolyn, who will meet Moneybird on 161 b better terms than when he beat her at Dunedin ■ Winning Flight is probably recovering form, but Carolyn gave her weight and beat her at the end of December Straight Bat, runner-up in the Middle Park Plate, might be the one to worry Carolyn. It is one of the tricks of the German propaganda machine to allege that the fountain of thoroughbred blood has been transferred from England to the Reich, and summaries of betting and other features of racing in Germany are broadcast to the world It was probably to offset this that “wireless” was installed at the Newmarket yearling sales. Regular meetings are held in Germany and occupied France. The Melbourne tipster who achieved some fame by supplying a remarkably high percentage of winners to Perth clients is said to have a very simple system. He attends a bookmakers’ club on Fridays, notes what horses are backed in doubles by certain people, and dispatches these as "prospects" to interstate backers. Lately the service has failed to maintain its reputation, its lucky trot having come to an end, but its operations have had repercussions that are causing concern in Melbourne. Perth' starting-price bookmakers, immediately the “tip" became apparent, l began to lay-off in Melbourne, and horses opened there at prices which were ilnpalatable to their connections. The problem will solve Itself, as the tipster will quickly lose his clientele now that his luck has changed. Night Eruption, who finished third over 10 furlongs and won over six on the same afternoon at Otakl, is an acceptor for two races at the same distances at Woodville. She is topweight with 9.0 in each. Among the horses cabled among those left in the Caulfield Futurity Stakes were a Theio-Queen Salute filly and a Foxbridge-Rose Latour colt. The horses referred to are Salutation and Bascule, which have been left in through oversight. Additional acceptors for the Waikato races are: Juvenile Handicap, Gentry; Linley Hack Handicap, Kanui; President’s Handicap, Marshall Hall. Century was not an acceptor for the Juvenile Handicap. On the second day at Trentham, Circular Note, Don’t Forget and Egyptian Rose were all weighted on the same mark over six furlongs. In the Publicans’ Handicap at Dunedin Egyptian Rose has to give the other two 31b, the result of her win in the Middle Park Plate.

The following rehandicaps were declared, following the Rotorua meeting, for the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting to-morrow: Linley Hack Handicap, Lady Reynard, 41b to 8.9; Beerescourt Hack Handicap, Sporting Sister, 61b to 8.5; Dorset, 51b to 8.2; Puketaha Handicap, Golden Survey, 61b to 8.2; Odtaa, 51b to 8.0; President’s Handicap, Golden Survey, 61b to 7.9. Progeny of Bulandshar topped the averages at the recent sales at Trentham. Seven were sold for 3210 guineas, an average of 4581 guineas. The top price for a Bulandshar was 1050 guineas. Six Foxbridges averaged 4521 guineas, and the most expensive of them was 900 guineas. Other sire averages were: Lord Quex 2564, Posterity 2464. Defoe 235, Vermeer 233, Man’s Pal 2221, Revelation 206 guineas. Burrabil. who’is to run in the £3OOO Futurity Stakes at Flemington tomorrow, was not one of those originally entered, and the late fee of £6O is being paid for him. ’ Although the Tuapeka Jockey Club has abandoned its meeting (Easter Saturday), the neighbouring Beaumont Club has decided to carry on on Easter Monday as usual. Burt Scott is gradually running into stronger company, but he is likely to start at a short price at New Brighton. He will probably be tested If Ronald Logan and Clockwork secure a good run. M. B. Edwards appears to hold a strong hand In the main handicap at New Brighton with Great Blaze and Jackaranda. Great Blaze won at Addington at the National and the Cup meetings, and again at the Canterbury Park fixture. His second at Washdyke indicated that he is at

home on grass. Jackaranda has not been out since he registered a second and a win in November, but that form was decidedly impressive.
