RAIN HID ESCAPE
RABAUL BANK OFFICERS BRISBANE, Feb. 12. Hidden from Japanese airmen by heavy rains, a small copra boat Stole furtively out of Rabaul Harbour on January 22, a few hours ahead of invading Japanese. Two of the men on the boat, Mr A. W. Clarke, manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Rabaul, and Mr R. W. Skillen, bank accountant, are now In Brisbane. They were able to save the bank records. Mr Clarke said in an interview that five' remaining members of the bank staff and the town’s civilian population had been evacuated earlier in the day. It was thought that they were now in the jungle with the defending troops. The invasion warning had been issued on January 21. By the morning of January 22 no landing had been made, but. at 2.20 p.m.. 11 Japanese four cruisers, and an aircraft carrier were about 30 miles off the coast.
