CYCLING PIONEER

FIRST PNEUMATIC TYRES Mr William Hume, one of the first men to use pneumatic tyres in a bicycle race, died at his residence near Belfast the other day. In 1889, when he was captain of the Belfast Cruisers’ Cycling Club, Mr Hume turned up with a pneumatic-tyred machine to take part m a sports meeting at Queen’s College, Belfast. The crowd jeered at the sight of a bicycle with thick tyres, but changed their mind when Hume won all four events against some of the best riders in Ireland.
