GERMAN SHIP LOST
Sunk By Axis Submarine LONDON, February 17. A German ship of 5000 tons has been torpedoed and sunk by an Axis submarine. It is not known whether the submarine was German or Italian. The Admiralty has disclosed that on January 31 an SOS purporting to be from the British liner Brittany was picked up. The message gave the ship’s position as 450 miles north of the Azores Islands, but it was at once clear, points out the Admiralty, that it was not the Brittany as she was not in those waters. Later, the SOS was repeated with greater urgency in German and English, and the real name of the ship was given. This German vessel was last heard of in Yokohama in August, 1941. The message indicated that the vessel was on fire and sinking. An immediate search was ordered, and a big patch of oil three miles wide was found. The German ship had sunk.
