TOBACCO GROWING

Gisborne Soil Too Good GISBORNE, February 18. The Gisborne district is unsuitable for tobacco-growing, according to a statement made at a meeting of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce. The president, Mr L. Miles, reported that a representative of the Department of Agriculture had paid a visit and was not in favour of tobaccogrowing in the district. He considered the Gisborne soil could be put to better uses. Mr W. E. Mcllwaine said the representative paid a compliment to the district. It was well known that the best tobacco grew on poor land.
