LARGEST IN HISTORY

U.S. Appropriations Bill (Rec. 6.30). WASHINGTON, Feb. 17. The House Appropriations Committee approved the Appropriations Bill—the largest in history— for 32,000,000.000 dollars, chiefly for war supplies. Army ordnance, shipbuilding and lendlease. The Bill Included 5,430,000,000 additional for lend-lease, bringing the total to 17,000,000.000. Rear-Admiral E. S. Land (chairman of the U.S. Maritime Commission) said that the tanker programme would give the United States the best and biggest fleet throughout the world by the end of 1943. He added that Nazi submarines were making a direct set at tankers. There were more tankers than cargo boats offering, therefore more tankers were torpedoed.
