BRITISH BETRAYAL

SPIES IN HONG KONG CHUNGKING, February 8. Describing the Japanese attack on Hong Kong, British officers who escaped to China, said that the enemy suddenly appeared from tunnels behind the defenders, trapping the British between two fires. They added that espionage and fifth columnists played a pivotal role. Fifth columnists had inter-connected air-raid shelters and defence tunnels cut into the Hong Kong rocks. Also, captured Japanese had maps showing the most minute details of every defence zone, including the most secret artillery em? placements, munition dumps, pill-boxes, and anti-aircraft guns.
