WEEK-END HARVESTERS ORGANISED
VOLUNTEERS FOR FARMS Parties for week-end harvest work, comprising members of the Borough Council and others in private employment, are being organised by the placement officer of the Temuka Borough Council. The need for additional workers to perform the task of assisting farmers with their harvest is urgent and men who would volunteer for this work, which is of national importance, are requested to supply their names to the Borough Council office. There will be blisters in abundance and aching shoulders for those who are not used to the work, but there is a fascination in handling sheaves and the satisfaction of assisting in valuable work. Farmers or groups of farmers can utilise labour available by arranging a chain system whereby crops can be handled in rotation by groups of eight to ten men, Instead of prolonging the completion of the work for some days by the engagement of small numbers of workers. This method was successfully used last Saturday, when a prop of linen flax in the Hilton district was stocked by a gang of ten men. Owing to lack of transport facilities, it will be necessary for farmers to arrange for the conveying of men from the Temuka Post Offiffice to work and for their return. Every worker on Scheme 13 who is fit is being placed on seasonal work. The number of men at present employed by the Borough Council is 18, of whom seven are unfit, and the number at the Domain is 23, of whom 17 are unfit.
