WARTIME POSTAL PROBLEMS

Discussions in Middle East (Rec. 7.45 pun.) RUGBY, Nov. 18. Mr Allan Chapman, Assistant-Post-master General, has just returned ’-om the Middle East where he discussed wartime postal problems with civilian and military authorities. Covering 15,000 miles, mainly by aeroplane, he visited Egypt, the Western Desert, the Mediterranean Fleet, Palestine, Syria, Cyprus, Iraq, Malta, Gambut, Nigeria and the Sudan. The average airgraphs sent from Britain overseas now is 168,000 a week and inwards, 158,000 a week. The aeroplane in which Mr Chapman travelled carried 500,000 airgraphs. This, although equivalent to about six tons of letters, weighs only 1381 b.
