WAR TIME SAVING
Saving, in every direction, is the keynote of these lays from actual money to all kinds of materials. You may be surpric. 1 to find how much can be saved 1 small amounts in various ways in the house—things we have never bothered about before in times of peace and plenty, yet the fact remains that we must do all we can to sai«.
I am sure, for instance, you have all had tin after tin of some kind of pol ■. which having gone hard, has bee., thrown away without any further thought. Maybe you’ll be glad to know that these can be saved and used to the last bit by adding a few drops of turpentine to furniture polishes. Again they can be scraped out, placed in an earthenware jar, together with two old candle ends and melted down. When the mixture is dissolved it should be allowed to cool slightly and at this stage a few drops of paraffin should be stirred in it. The nollsh can then be poured Into the empty tins, covered, and left ready for use again. Metal polishes which have had the tops left oft by accident soon get clogged at the end of the tin. so add a drop or two of paraffin, replace the tops, leave for a time and then shake vigorously so that the mixture will be thoroughly shaken up. Paraffin, of course, is excellent for metal cleaning purposes. Another good dodge with regard to hardened metal polish is to add a little ammonia to the tin and then shake well.
Oil stains on a carpet are particularly difficult to deal with. Make a paste of some boiling water and fuller’s earth mixed with a little powdered magnesia. Spread thickly over the stain. Leave to dry, then brush off.
