TEMUKA MANAGER GUEST AT SOCIAL

Twenty-one Years’ Service Milford Dairy Company’s Appreciation Mr R. A. Lyall, who has completed 21 years service as manager of the Milford Dairy Company, was honoured at a social arranged by the Company, in the Milford Hall, which was filled to capacity. The high esteem in which Mr and Mrs Lyall are held was indicated by the presence of so many representatives from contiguous districts, as well as practically the whole population of Milford. In making a presentation of an inscribed gold watch to Mr Lyall and a china cabinet to Mrs Lyall, the chairman of the Company (Mr P. Downes) said that the excellent attendance was a sterling tribute to the ability and qualities of their guest. The directors and suppliers had wholeheartedly approved the suggestion to do honour to one who had studied their interests so carefully and managed the factory so successfully. In the last five years the Company had been sending 200 tons of cheese annually to the local market, and this had been largely made possible by the ability of the manager, who had been a potent factor in building and maintaining the high reputation which the Company enjoyed in the cheese industry. Mrs Lyall, too. had played a worthy part. In the manifold duties devolving on a manager there were times when more than one pair of hands was necessary, and the extra assistance needed had been invariably given by her in a gracious manner. Mrs Lyall could claim a good share in the success of the Company. Speaking as chairman of the Canterbury Education Board, Mr G. W. Armitage acknowledged the service which Mr Lyall had given as chairman of the school committee for 20 years. His work had been characterised by thoroughness, and the Board was deeply appreciative of his assistance in furthering the cause of education.

The manager of the Clandeboye factory (Mr J. Craig) who has been associated with the cheese-making industry for more than 50 years, said that through the Factory Managers’ Association, Mr Lyall had given the benefit of his services to the whole of South Canterbury. The wonderful progress which had been made by the Milford Factory was a tribute to his workmanship. The secretary of the Company (Mr F. J. Robertson) added his meed of praise, and supported the remarks of the previous speakers. Other speakers were Mr J. Johnstone, a foundation director, who made a trip from the North Island to be present, and Mr J. Woodhead, who spoke for the residents. In thanking the people for their appreciation of his work, Mr Lyall paid a tribute to the work of their late secretary, Mr B. Hughes, who had done so much for. the welfare of the factory. The evening took the form of a dance Interspersed with songs contributed by Mrs C. C. Stanley, Miss Caithness and Mr J. Woodhead. The M.C.’s were Messrs R. McNab and G.
