GREAT SUCCESS

Air Force Recruiting Campaign CENTURY MARK REACHED With the 100th applicant being interviewed just on closing time last evening, the Air Force recruiting campaign which was conducted in Timaru on Thursday and yesterday, fulfilled the most sanguine expectations, and on a population basis places Timaru and South Canterbury high on the Dominion honours list in the number of recruits who came forward. At the close of the first day 62 men had been examined and accepted by the Royal New Zealand Air Force Selection Committee, and at 5 pm. yesterday, when the committee, under Squadron Leader A. C. McArthur, concluded its sitting the number had been brought to 89. In the evening, when a clerk only was in attendance, registrations brought the coveted century mark, the goal which Squadron Leader McArthur hoped to reach in view of the excellent response of the first day. The recruits were again representative of the whole district and came from as far afield as Ashburton and HakaSquadron Leader McArthur, at the conclusion of the sitting yesterday, said he had been very pleased with the response made to the recruiting campaign in South Canterbury, and was very impressed with the type of men offering. The number who came forward to offer their services compared very favourably with the numbers from other districts. The following candidates were examined yesterday up to 5 pm.:— Timaru —D. G. McNab. Wilson. A. W. Ree J . Ashburton—B. C. Grant. Fairlie—M. A. Roberts. E. R. Butcher. Geraldine—M. F. Fifield. Orari—E. Fitzgerald. St. Andrews—L. C. Dron. Temuka —R. J. McLeod, G. M. F. Moore. Albury—B. E. Smith. Hakataramea—A. M. Macleod.
