POTENT DRINK
Some New Zealand Cider “PEOPLE CAN MAKE MISTAKES’ (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 23. A proportion of New Zealand cider came in for comment at the Magistrate’s Court in the prosecution of Angelo Alematoo, restaurant proprietor, who pleaded guilty to a charge of selling liquor without a licence. The prosecution stated that the police bought champagne cider containing 24.5 proof spirit In the restaurant, paying 5/- for the bottle. “We don’t look upon the defendant as a sly grogger in the ordinary common sense. The case is brought more as a warning. and the police are quite satisfied that he is selling this overproof cider, actually believing it to be ordinary cider,” said Sub-Inspector Capp. Counsel for the defendant said that the defendant did not know the cider contained such an alcoholic content. It was supplied to him as an ordinary beverage along with other drinks. “New Zealand ciders are such that many people can make mistakes, thinking they are drinking an innocuous drink, and finding when they get outside they have been drinking something very potent,” said the Magistrate, Mr J. H. Luxford. The case was very different from the ordinary slygrog offence. He imposed a fine of £2 and costs.
