TAIKO At the May meeting of the Taiko Women’s Institute, Mrs A. Marshall presided, and extended a welcome to girls from Stratheona Training Hostel. The resignation of Miss Alma Blackwood, who is taking up nursing as a career, was received with regret. Mrs Marshall, delegate to the annual Council meeting at Pleasant Point, gave a comprehensive report. Mrs McLeod, assisted by Mrs Marshall, gave an account of a trip to Nelson via the West Coast with a Group Travel party. Competitions resulted as follows: Queen cakes, Mrs Stewart 1, MissGibson 2. Premier bloom, Mrs Allan 1, Mrs McLeod 2, Mrs Gliddon 3. Potatoes, Mrs McLeod 1, Mrs Gliddon 2. A competition arranged by Mrs Turpie, was won by Mrs F. Armstrong. Mrs Turpie and Mrs Talbot were hostesses for the afternoon. ESK VALLEY A meeting of the Esk Valley Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs A. M. Copland. There was an excellent attendance and the afternoon was pleasantly spent in play reading and knitting for Red Cross. Mrs Coup, delegate to the Federation meeting at Waimate, gave a detained report and was thanked by Miss Roberts. Miss I. Mills consented to give a talk on first aid at the monthly meetings. For the coming year it was decided that members should learn to spin and weave wool. An auction in aid of the St. Andrews Red Cross was held, the sum of 14/6 being raised. Competitions resulted as follows: Premier bloom, Mrs Bishop 1, Mrs Copland 2. Jar of flowers, Miss Mills 1, Mrs Bishop 2, Mrs Coup 3. LYALLDALE Mrs R. Thompson presided at the second annual birthday party of the Lyalldale Women’s Institute. Visitors were welcomed, also Mrs D. Midgley, a new member. Prizes for annual competitions were given by Mesdames McKeown, Moyle, Thompson and Gray. A request was received from the Red Cross for articles for the Bluecliffs Emergency Hospital. Arrangements were made for a Red Cross Sewing Circle to be held once a month. Floral tributes were presented to Mesdames Mills, McKeown, R. Thompson, Thomas, Caswell, Pye and Sidney Thompson. A talk was given by Mrs Sidney Thompson on France, where she had lived for more than 20 years. She was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs Winnington won the prize given by Mrs Caswell for the musical hat game. The prize given by Mrs Porter was won by Miss Coles. Prizes for the annual competitions were won as follows: Cooking, Mrs Thomas. Premier bloom, Mrs McKeown. Handwork, Mrs Daly. Vegetables, Mrs Pye. The birthday cake was made and iced by Mrs Caswell. Mrs McKeown lit the candles and Mrs Pye blew them out. Mrs Mills, president of the Waimate Federation and representatives from Gleniti, St. Andrews, Esk Valley. Otipua and Bluecliffs, cut the cake. Mrs Thomas’s prize for the paper hat competition was won by Miss Mills. The competitions resulted as follows: Premier bloom, Mrs Thomas 1, Miss Delury 2, Mrs Pye 3. Tray cloth, Mrs McKeown 1, Mrs Johnstone 2, Mrs Pye and Miss Pye (equal) 3. Carrots, Mrs Johnstone 1, Mrs Thomas 2. Mrs Pye 3. Tea dish, Mrs McKeown 1, Mrs Quinn 2, Mrs Porter 3.
