LATE CABLE NEWS

DARLAN SPEAKS LONDON, May 33. In a broadcast to the French peopla this afternoon, Admiral Darlan said that the first batch of refugees from Paris would be allowed to return next week. He said that Germany had started the war herself, and considered herself capable of finishing it alone. France was free to choose the path she wished to follow. He added that they should remember what some people were inclined to forget, and that was that France had suffered the greatest defeat in her history. For this he blamed successive Governments from 1919 to 1939 and also the failure of her Allies. The people of France had to choose between life and death. Marshal Petain had chosen life and he appealed to the people to help him in the work of reconstruction.
