FORTY MILES A WEEK

Ration For Melbourne Motorists (Rec. 12.42) MELBOURNE, May 7. Private motoring has been reduced to 40 miles a week under the new petrol ration scale, details of which were announced by Senator Mcßride to-day. The minimum private monthly allowance from June 1 is five gallons for 8 h.p. cars and the maximum 11 gallons for cars over 30 h.p.Thls ration is half the amount allowed when rationing was introduced in October. Motorists at present obtaining an extra ration under “business and private” fuel licences are being cut 20 per cent and will be required to answer a questionnaire stating how much they used respective-, ly for business and pleasure.

MEDALS FOR NAZI SHIP SCUTTLERS

(Rec. 1.45 am.) LONDON, May 7. The Berlin Official News Agency says Hitler has decided to award medals to the masters and crews scuttling ships or running the blockade. This is in reply to the Admiralty’s warning to scuttiers which Berlin calls inhuman.

INTEGRITY OF CRETE

(Rec. 1.30 am.) CANEA, May 7. Major-General Freyberg (Allied Commander-In-Chief at Crete), has issued the following Order of the Day: "By the united efforts of the Allied military forces in addition to civilians, we cannot only maintain the integrity of Crete against any invader, but in time by God’s grace, advance from this base and restore freedom and independence to the whole of Greece.”

SOLE IMPORTER OF RUBBER

(Rec. 1.45 am.) LONDON, May 7. The Ministry of Supply becomes the sole importer of rubber under agreement with the London rubber market. The market will remain open with reduced powers to carry on distribution to consumers. There will be no interference with pin-chase and sales for delivery outside the United Kingdom, which will bring in considerable dollar

NINE RAIDERS DESTROYED

(Rec. 1.30 am.) LONDON, May 7. Nine enemy ’planes are known to have been destroyed last night following large scale activity over many widely separated districts, says an Air Ministry communique. Considerable damage was caused at Clydeside, which was attacked again as was Merseyside. There were a number of casualties at both places. Large bombs were dropped on several places in north-east England, East Anglia. South-west England and elsewhere without doing much damage. Swarms of German moonlight raiders were over central Scotland last night in one of the heaviest attacks experienced there. The Luftwaffe scattered other forces over a wide area but the month’s total-of enemy planes destroyed was brougnt to 50. AUXILIARY VESSEL SUNK (Rec. 1.45 am.) LONDON, May 7. The Admiralty announces that a German aeroplane bombed, machinegunned and sank his Majesty’s auxiliary vessel Patia which shot down the attacker. U.S. EXPEDITION WASHINGTON, May 6. It is learned in Washington that the United States is planning to send four cutters to Greenland to prevent any further Axis activity. The expedition will possibly include the Byrd expedition vessels North Star and Bear.
