GAVE LIFE FOR OTHERS

George Cross Awards

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, January 18. Two awards of the George Cross are announced. The first was won by Mr A. E. Dolphin, a porter at the South-Eastern Hospital, New Cross, London. When four nurses were killed by a bomb at the hospital, Mr Dolphin found a fifth pinioned by masonry. The wall was

heara to crack and other workers jumped clear, but Mr Dolphin threw himself across the nurse's body. The wall collapsed, and when they were extricated, the nurse, although severely injured, was alive, but Mr Dolphin was dead. Mr L. J. Miles, who, when an explosion was imminent, ran in its direction in order to warn residents, won the second award. Mr Miles was fatally injured. The George Medal is awarded to Mr S. R. Campbell Little, chief engineer of a London hospital. Although blown down by a bomb and with a rib fractured and an ankle damaged, Mr Campbell Little rushed to the boiler house and shut off the fires, watercocks and gas mains. Several women are among the recipients of the George Medal.
