STRONG ATTACKS ON MALTA

Germans Pay Heavy Price By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received January 20, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 17. It is officially announced from Malta that at least 15 raiders were shot down on Sunday, and 10, probably 13, on Saturday. A Malta communique confirmed that fighters shot down seven, probably eight, Junkers on Saturday and damaged two others. Anti-aircraft batteries brought down three more. Two of the principal raids on Sunday were by dive-bombing Stukas. Fighters and anti-aircraft batteries brought down at least 15 of them. One of our fighters was shot down. Considerable damage was done to civilian property. The Germans made five raids on Sunday beginning in the morning and an onslaught on the harbour. Severe damage was done for the second successive day to a 400-year-old church. The Berlin News Agency states that Stuka timbers resumed attacks on Valetta to-day and set fire to the docks in which the aircraft-carrier H-M-S. Illustrious is being repaired. Three bombs hit the Illustrious and others hit a destroyer, a tug, an arsenal and factories.
