OLD HALL BURNED
BLAZE IN WELLINGTON By Telegraph- -Press Association ' WELLINGTON, December 30. Billowing smoke shortly after 9 a.m. attracted a large number of people to Boulcott Street, where the old Masonic Hall, a lofty pile of ancient timber, occupied for some years by the Wellington Cabinet Company as a factory for the manufacture of furniture and bedding, provided a thrill for those looking on, for the fire had a good hold when the firemen got there. All that could be done was to prevent the spread of the flames to the adjoining residences, old wooden houses that nestled close on all sides except the street frontage. This was successfully accomplshed, though some houses suffered from water and smoke. Only the shell of the hall now stands. The interior is completely gutted and any contents not actually burned are destroyed. The building, owned by W. R. Kenner, was insured for £3OOO. The Wellington Cabinet Company owned the plant and machinery, which were insured for £5OO, and the stock which was covered for £2OOO. The damage is estimated at between £5OOO and £6OOO.
