Chinese Hold Up Thrust By Japanese By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received December 20, 12.36 a.m.) NEW YORK, December 18. According to the Shanghai correspondent of the “New York Times” the Chinese in the Yangtse Valley are assassinating prominent Japanese army officers and businessmen to prevent the withdrawal of Japanese troops from the Yangtse for a thrust southwards. This action accords with Marshal Chang Kai-Shek’s policy of preventing encirclement by Japan’s seizure of the East Indies. Japan has been forced to Increase her garrisons in the bigger cities on the Yangtee. The puppet Government at Nanking faces a crisis owing to the Chinese banks declaring that they are unwilling to support the regime’s financial arrangements unless its head Wang Ching-Wei is relegated to a minor capacity. There has also been a -pllt in the puppet government in favour of the Finance Minister, Chow Fuhal, who was formerly a Communist.
