WAIMATE NEW BUILDINGS

Residence For Police Sergeant Gaol Also Being Built Some time ago a new police station was completed in Waimate, and work has now started on the construction of a sergeant’s residence, and two-car garage. The successful tendered was Mr J. Calder, of Christchurch, and the price was about £2500. The residence, of which the foundation has been laid, will consist of six rooms, with the laundry and all conveniences under the same roof. The sitting room, as an example of the size of the rooms, will be 15ft by 13ft. The residence will front High Street, while the garage and gaol will face Shearman Street. The gaol will contain two cells 9ft by Bft which will be electrically heated, as well as a search lobby and conveniences. A building formerly used as a stable is to be removed, as is also the present gaol. SHOP CLOSING HOURS Waimate shops will remain open until 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Boxing Day as well as Christmas Day. On Friday, December 27, shops will close at 5.30 p.m. and will observe the half-day as usual on the Saturday. Similar arrangements have been made for the New Year period, and shops will be closed on January 1 and 2, and there will be no late night on Friday, January 3. The late night will be on New Year’s Eve, when shops will remain open until 10 o’clock. The Retailers’ Association has also decided to close all day on February 8 for the school picnic. TENNIS The Waimate B2 tennis team to play St. Paul’s at Waimate in the final of the north zone of the Waihao Tennis Sub-Association’s competition is as follows W. McNeill, B. Bell, P. Hynes, T. Calder Misses M. Brock, P. Paul, P. Fraser and C. Smith. PERSONAL Mrs J. Hennessy returned to Waimate from the north yesterday. Mrs B. S. Runciman has returned from a holiday in the North Island. Mr D. Hicks, Wellington, is a visitor to Waimate. Sub-Inspector E. C. Turner, of Christchurch, is on holiday in Waimate. Mr and Mrs Rewi Sibley, Dunedin, are the guests of Mrs P. Grant, “Grantlea," Waimate. Miss M. Morrison, Harris Street, left yesterday for her home in Christchurch. Mr R. G. Stevenson left for Te Puke yesterday, where he will take over the managership of the branch of the Union Bank of Australia. Mr and Mrs W. Shrimpton, New Plymouth, are on holiday in Waimate. Mrs Stewart Armitage, Dunedin, will arrive in Waimate to-day to spend Christmas with her mother, Mrs Donald Macdonald. Mr E. Stiles, of Quarry Street, St. Kilda, Dunedin, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs C. W. Sharp, Dash Street, returned to Dunedin yesterday. At a meeting of the Vestry of St. Augustine’s Church, the resignation of Mr Frank Drayton as verger was accepted. Mr Drayton has been verger for the last 14 years and resigns owing to ill-health. It was decided to date his resignation from December 31, and to grant him a bonus as a token of appreciation of his long and faithful service. Mrs M. D. Grant, Livingstone Street, Timaru, is visiting friends in Waimate. NUKUROA SCHOOL CONCERT The annual concert of the NukuroaStudholme School was held on December 17. The chairman, Mr F. Henshaw, after congratulating the pupils and teachers on the excellence of the programme, distributed the class and the special prizes as follows: Sewing, Std. Vl.—(Mrs T. L. Hayman) Roma Patterson.
